Themersons
2018
Ulica Themersonów 5, Themersons Festival, Płocka Art Gallery, Płock, Poland
Themersons is a series of pencil drawings inspired by the avant-garde spirit of Stefan and Franciszka Themerson. The series consists of two interconnected pieces: "The Eye and the Ear I" and "The Eye and the Ear II". These works explore themes of sensory perception, the interaction between sight and sound, and the ways in which we experience and interpret the world around us.
In these drawings, the eye and the ear are not merely physical organs but symbols of the ways we engage with our environment - through vision and listening. The Eye and the Ear I and The Eye and the Ear II delve into the relationship between these senses, using subtle pencil strokes to highlight their complexity and interconnection. The variations between the two works explore the nuances of perception and invite the viewer to reflect on how we receive, process, and respond to sensory information.
By using only pencil on paper, the series distills the sensory experience to its most basic, yet expressive form. The minimalist approach mirrors the Themersons' experimental attitude towards art, where the simplicity of the medium serves to explore complex ideas about perception, communication, and the world of sensory experience.
